BeSafe (http://besafe.byu.edu) is an online safety resource for the BYU community. As technology provides a limitless array of options to consume, create, and interact, it also brings with it dangers and pitfalls. BeSafe was created to help identify and avoid the downsides of technology by emphasizing personal responsibility and wisdom in the use of technology.

Spam & Phishing – As email has proven itself to be an indispensible communication tool, it comes with risks, if left unchecked, could prove costly. Spam or unsolicited email can cause irritation by flooding your inbox and in many instances are drafted carefully to “phish” for information from you or off your computer. BeSafe can help you figure out how to avoid falling into the traps of spam and “phishing” email.

Viruses & Malware – All too common on the internet, are the computer programs that are created with a malicious intent to cause damage to your computer. These viruses may spread through networks, downloads, email, and removable media and can potentially interfere with the normal working of your computer. BeSafe lists the resources you can use to protect your computer from such malicious attacks by helping you utilize software and best-practices against viruses and Malware.

Participation in social networks bring immense pleasure and peer-recognition to the average user but also bring along ills such as embarrassment, cyber-bullying, identity-theft, and access to inappropriate content. As social networking can be addicting, BeSafe provides tools, tips, and tactics for the safe and appropriate use of Social Networking sites.

Web Content – With the internet being regarded as the main repository for information, it is rapidly becoming the first resource that one uses to share, create, collaborate. There is nothing that prevents the user from encountering violent, pornographic, obscene, vulgar, and other inappropriate content on the internet apart from good judgment and safe-practices. BeSafe can aid in knowing how to best circumvent undesired content by using available tools and safe practices.

Gaming – In this day of simulation and virtual reality, almost 99% of boys and 94% of girls play video games. In moderation, games can provide a much needed diversion and cause strengthening of relationships in a peer group. Like any other technology, abuse of gaming can cause imbalance in study time, exercise, sleep, and “real-world” relationships. BeSafe can help you with resources you need to help your students overcome these undesired side-effects of video gaming.
